2023 Spending Fun Fact Report

Just like that, another year has passed! Do you remember how you spent your money in 2023? You might be thinking, ‘I overspent again this year, what should I do?’ or “How can we make cents make sense?’…

 

To help you plan for 2024, HSBC ‘Budget’ is bringing you the first ever 2023 Spending Fun Fact Report*. This report, arranged by our HSBC ‘CFO Lions’, analyses spending trends and offers a big-picture view of personal finances. It is based on our HSBC customers’ spending habits, providing useful insights to help you get off to a flying start for the new year!


Overview of ‘2023 Spending Fun Fact Report’

  • The median yearly expenses of HSBC customers increased by 18% compared to 2022
  • The top 3 transaction categories with the biggest increase in 2023 were: 💰Savings and Investments, ✈️Travel and 🎬Leisure
  • The median yearly transaction amount in Japanese Yen increased by 150% compared to 2022
  • In both 2023 and 2022, the highest transaction amount recorded was on 3 January each year. From now on, the HSBC ‘CFO Lions’ have declared this day as the ‘Budget Day’!
  • The largest single purchase exceeded HKD10 million and the most app subscriptions paid by a single user was 10!

💸Increased spending power

In terms of HSBC customers' median yearly transaction amount, it increased by 18% compared to last year. Some categories saw particularly high increment: Savings and Investments (348%), Travel (137%), and Leisure (41%).

The lead category was ‘Savings and Investments’, which seems to indicate that HSBC customers have made use of FinFit tips to become Downturn Winners. They’ve taken the test to understand their own FinFitness, and started engaging in diversified and balanced investments. 

 

Of course, it comes as no surprise that ‘Travel’ was a close second! Given that revenge travel was a popular phenomenon this year, the median transaction amount in Japanese Yen increased by 150% compared to 2022! Not only do you know how to rake in the cash, you also know how to spend it well! Believe it or not, the record for the largest single purchase exceeded HKD10 million! What could possibly cost so much in one purchase?

It was luxury jewelry and accessories! 

But let’s not skip the small spending. Although there’s a lot of talk about passive income, passive expenses can creep in as well. We all enjoy online subscriptions, so much that our HSBC ‘CFO Lions’ has found our customers have subscriptions to and pay for as many as 10 entertainment apps! Adding other random expenses like movies, take-outs, coffee, etc., accumulated over 365 days, the small amounts can slowly eat into your savings.

💭Time to rethink! How do the next generation view money?

While many may think younger generation is all about living freely and spending without a care, HSBC ‘CFO Lions’ tell a different story. According to the data from ‘Budget’#, the top 3 groups who visit ‘Budget’ most frequently are all under 30: 1st - Ages 18-22, 2nd - Ages 23-27 and 3rd - Ages 11-17^.

Indeed, today’s 20-somethings are great at being ‘slashers’, they’ve even taken an additional role to become their own ‘CFO’ by making good use of the HSBC HK App’s ‘Budget’. Not only do they know how to earn money, they’ve also learned to track how they spend their money in order to align their money decisions with their life goals.
